Spring soccer season is here, and as former college players turned soccer moms (and coaches), we know first hand how much impact sideline support can have on young athletes. The way we cheer shapes their confidence, love for the game, and overall experience.

We’ve experienced the highs and lows of competition, but we also understand that youth soccer isn’t just about winning—it’s about growth, teamwork, and enjoyment. Here’s how we can all be the best sideline supporters this season:

  1. Focus on Effort, Not Just Results

As players, we thrived on encouragement that recognized our hard work—not just goals or wins. Kids need the same. Instead of saying, “Great goal!” try, “I love how hard you’re working out there!” Recognizing effort keeps the game fun and builds resilience.

  1. Be Their Biggest Encourager, Not Another Coach

We get it—it’s tempting to shout out advice. But kids need space to make decisions and learn from mistakes. Trust the coaches and focus on encouragement:

– “Way to hustle!”

– “Nice teamwork!”

– “Keep going—you’ve got this!”

This helps kids stay confident and engaged rather than overwhelmed.

  1. Cheer for the Whole Team

Soccer is a team sport, and every player contributes. Applaud good plays from all kids—not just your own. When they see that effort is valued across the board, they’ll learn the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.

  1. Set the Tone with Respect

Referees and coaches are there to help kids grow. We’ve all been on the field when emotions run high, but as parents, we must model respect. Complaining about calls or second-guessing the coach only teaches kids to do the same. Instead, show grace and keep the focus on enjoying the game.

  1. Celebrate Progress—Big or Small

Every game is an opportunity to grow. Maybe your child didn’t score, but they made great passes, defended well, or showed resilience. Recognizing these moments builds confidence and keeps them excited to improve.

  1. Keep the Game Fun

At the end of the day, we want our kids to love the sport as much as we did. Keep soccer a positive, pressure-free experience, and let them enjoy the journey!

This season, let’s be the parents who uplift, inspire, and help create lasting memories for our young players. Cheer loud, cheer proud—but most of all, cheer with love.

See you on the sidelines!
